"Cleopatra Jones" by Mark Eitzel from the "60 Watt Silver Lining" album.
Hadn't heard it in ages!
"It's named after a 1970s black cinema heroine. Uptempo, and sung at a fast pace, it starts, “The people I was with said you were nothing but a fag hag and a dope fiend/ but the song of your eyes/ was of the loneliest woman I’ve ever seen./ We talked drunkenly at the bar./ I thought, there’s a sweetness here the world is missing./ You just got fired and now you’re out high and drunk and celebrating.” What a great opening scene! Mark Eitzel creates a sense of a character that is confident and watchful, strong and vulnerable; and the listener is convinced when Eitzel sings, “Cleopatra Jones, if they don’t see her then they’re blind.” Eitzel even alludes to the film legend: “Cleopatra Jones, Kung Fu just like Hercules./ Cleopatra Jones, teach me how to leave evil men on their knees.” The song adds something eccentric, even heroic, to the collection. “Cleopatra Jones” is a song of imagination and sympathy and some wit. "Flat Top" by Goo Goo Dolls Flat top intervention Bringin' home the new invention See it there in pieces on the ground A television war between the cynics and the saints Flip the dial and that's whose side you're on Sleeping on the White House lawn ain't never changed a thing Look at all the washed out Hippie dreams And it's fallin' all around us Is this some kind of joke they're trying to pull on us? Fallin' all around us I'll turn my head off for a while The tabloid generation's lost Choking on it's fear Used to be that's all we had to fear And conscience keeps us quiet while the crooked love to speak There's knowledge wrapped in blankets on the street. A visionary coward says that anger can be power As long as there's a victim on TV

Digital Sucks, thats why we're having to buy the same releases again and again, cos of the cheap and shoddy transfers from vinyl. Has anyone noticed even releases from years ago are being repackaged with different sleeves, in order to con the consumer into thinking they are new releases. Is this the record companies attempt to fight back as a result of digital downloading I wonder. Read an article the other day where Neil Young is now stating that the Itunes/Ipod revolution is killing audio quality, despite him making his songs readily available on Itunes. His next release apparently is a Blu-ray only release. Anyway, the best song I listened to today was 'When We Two Parted' by The Afghan Whigs www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqj2eL1QbQA

It wouldnae be bad if they employed people to remaster CD releases from the original tapes who actually had a fuckin clue what they are doin, but you are right, some attempts are a best woeful!! Repackaging an unchanged product is a time served capitalist wet fuckin dream and I wonder if you are right that they are ripping the pish! Long Live SACD - ha ha oooooh the whigs, nice one - mmmm..... might put on some Twilight Singers

'Hughes' by The New Amsterdams www.dailymotion.com/video/x3s2ms_the-new-amsterdams-hughes_music'The song Hughes, which sounds like its being played on a ramshackle veranda as the sun sets and the fireflies rise, takes to task the director of such classics as Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink, lamenting, Hughes, you ruined me/ You promised me make-believe.' - Pure Volume
